"THE CODES OF GENDER"

Codes of Gender typically refer to the unwritten rules and expectations that society has established for how we should present ourselves, behave, and interact with others based on their gender.

These codes are deeply rooted in cultural norms, stereotypes, and power dynamics. These codes vary across different cultures and historical periods.

Gender Codes include dress code in the sense that expectations around clothing, accessories, and grooming are based on gender. It also includes different verbal and nonverbal communication, such as tone, language, and body language. Verbally in the sense that females are said to be more verbally expressive and emotive, they use more words and ask more questions, and engage in more conversations, and often use indirect language, hinting and suggestions. While males tend to be more concise and direct in communicating and use fewer words, ask fewer questions, and often use direct language, statements and assertions. Basically females talk more than males. In non-verbal communication females tend to use more facial expressions, body language and touch and males tend to use fewer facial expressions and less body language. These examples explains how society expects males and females to act, as it is considered odd and foreign when things that are said to be acted out as females are done so by males.

Idioms and expressions like "Be a man", "Act like a girl", "Blue is for boys and pink is for girls" , have reflected societal attitudes and expectations surrounding gender roles.

The conversation surrounding gender has expanded beyond traditional male and female categories with a growing recognition of non-binary and genderqueer identities. Non-binary referring to individuals who do not identify as exclusively male or female.
